I’ve Got Good News!
I have good news! DC for Democracy endorsed Erin Palmer for DC Council Chairwoman. With 79% of the vote, I’m the only non-incumbent endorsed by DC for Democracy without tallying second-choice votes.
DC for Democracy is an all-volunteer, grassroots organization dedicated to good government, expanding democracy, and affordable housing, among many other noble causes. I have had the pleasure of working with DC for Democracy for many years on important issues, like improving and expanding vote by mail in DC; strengthening rent control for more affordable housing; and championing DC Statehood. One of the things I’ve appreciated most about working with DC for Democracy is how they welcome my children into local advocacy.
Jeremiah Lowery, the chair of DC for Democracy said it best:
“There was no question that we would endorse Erin Palmer for Council Chair. I can’t think of anybody who better represents [DC for Democracy’s] values than Erin. She has shown up and pushed and fought for every policy issue we care about. Her integrity and commitment are beyond question. The current Council Chair is the biggest obstacle to the Council acting for progressive change. We badly need the kind of leadership that Erin personifies.”
Will you join DC for Democracy in supporting our campaign? We’re approaching another fundraising deadline and I’m asking for your help. If you haven’t donated the maximum amount of $200, please consider another donation and ask your friends and family to donate. Your donations keep this people-powered campaign running!
DC for Democracy isn’t the only noteworthy recent interest in our campaign: you may remember Pepper, the neighborhood cat, from our campaign video. Our campaign recently got noticed by (the Internet celebrity) Jorts the Cat. You can read more about my plans for non-human animals on my Medium page. And don’t forget to #VoteWithYourPaws!
I’m the only candidate for Council Chair who is participating in DC’s Fair Elections program, and I’m the first and only candidate to have qualified under the program. I’m also the first and only candidate who is the choice of cats everywhere. Under the Fair Elections program, donations from DC residents are matched at a rate of 5:1. By removing the influence of corporate money and empowering those without connections to corporate interests to run, the program allows candidates to focus on meeting with, listening to, and being responsive to DC residents (and cats).
One sole incumbent and candidate has nevertheless chosen not to participate in the Fair Elections program and instead cozy up to corporate donors — my opponent, the current Council Chair. While every single one of our donations is from an individual, with over 90% from DC residents, my opponent has raised tens of thousands of dollars from corporations. DC residents deserve a Council Chair who will put their interests first.
Erin has received more than 625 donations across all 8 wards, with more than 90% of those donations from DC residents.
If you are looking for ways to support Erin for DC Council Chairwoman, I hope you will also consider:
- sharing this email with five friends and encouraging them to make a donation;
- attending DC for Democracy’s People-Powered Text Bank for their endorsed candidates on Saturday, January 29 from 3:00–4:30 p.m.;
- joining our Petition Signature Launch Party on Saturday, February 5 at 2:00 p.m. to help me get on the ballot; and
- requesting a yard or window sign.
I am deeply grateful for your support, and I can’t wait to continue working to build a brighter DC for all of us.
